PlayStation 5 surprise free download slammed by angry fans

This couldn't have come at worse time

Yesterday, The Last of Us Part II Remastered welcomed a free update on PlayStation 5, coinciding with the release of the game’s PC port.

Patch 2.0.0 introduced some welcomed new additions to the roguelike No Return mode, Marlene and Bill.

Bill’s playstyle is that of a ‘smuggler’.

He’s able to access a new custom pump shotgun from dead drops and will receive double rewards from dead drops too.

He’s strong against melee attacks but like Tommy and Joel, cannot dodge.

Marlene is a ‘risk taker’, allowing players to experiment with a custom assault rifle and new ‘all or nothing’ gambits.

She can also reroute her path once per run.

That’s not all the update introduced as it also added new maps to No Return (School, Nest, Streets, and Overlook), new trophies, and added an unlockable skin for Ellie inspired by Jordan’s jacket in Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Elsewhere, simple fixes were made across the game, but one of these fixes has seemingly opened a can of worms.

You can watch our review of The Last of Us Part II Remastered below.

The update appears to have, in some cases, taken away players’ upgrades and holsters in the base game.

Holsters are found throughout the story, allowing players to more easily access their guns, with players also collecting pills on their travels which, in turn, unlock upgrades.

As The Last of Us Part II is a linear game, players cannot go back to collect the holster and pill-unlocked upgrades that have been taken away, placing them at a great disadvantage.

“Why did you guys remove the holster and some upgrades we got from tablets?” wrote one Twitter user. “Not good Naughty Dog.”

“Thanks for not testing this patch. Now all my holsters, skills, and upgrades are gone! And I don’t have enough parts or supplements to even get close to where I was,” added another.

“This update took away all my skills, currently with Abby in The Island section and I have no skills and not nearly enough supplements to get back to where I was,” said one player.

There are tons more posts along these lines.

“Now I have to play through 60% of the game with limited gear or restart from 10 hours ago,” one comment read, putting the unfortunate glitch into perspective.

The good news is that Naughty Dog is aware of the problem.

“We are aware of and investigating a known issue regarding additional weapon holsters and purchased skills disappearing after updating to Patch 2.0.0. At this time, we suggest players refrain from overwriting any of their existing manual saves,” they wrote.

If I were you, as annoying as it is, I’d hang fire and heed that advice.

It seems the best course of action is to wait until a new patch is issued; although for anyone hoping to finish the game before season two of HBO’s series drops, I realise that’s far less than ideal.
