PlayStation 5 owners may be sleeping on saving a ton of hard drive storage space - definitely not something we can afford to be wasting in 2026!
As great as modern video games are, with gameplay innovations, stunning graphics and increased performance, they can rack up the gigabytes when it comes to storage. I know I'm not the only one who's had to make a quick order of compatible SSD cards for extra storage space, which wastes you time and money.
Despite PlayStation running its Kraken compression software that shrinks game file sizes down, some games blow past 100 GB anyway. If you’re a Call of Duty fan, you're no doubt very familiar with the demands this series has on precious storage space. In some cases, it can take up hundreds of GB.
As you can imagine, if you own a PlayStation 5 with 1TB of storage, the Call of Duty series alone can have a huge dent in hard drive space, and that’s not even taking into account the mandatory system settings, which take up over 100GB on its own.

Thankfully, there are a few simple steps that you can take to free up some space.
There Are Loads of Ways to Create More PlayStation 5 Storage

The most obvious step would be to purchase an internal SSD drive and install it in your PlayStation 5. Similarly, you could also purchase an external SSD to store all your backwards-compatible PlayStation 4 games, so that they don't take up internal storage space.
However, there are other, more cost-effective ways that you can free up some PlayStation 5 storage space.
For starters, as great as it is, the file size of those clips takes a massive toll on the console storage. So, if you’ve already shared that footage with a friend, if you no longer need it, delete it.
If you’ve got multiple gameplay clips on the PlayStation 5 storage that you’ve forgotten about, you might be surprised by how much space you could free up in a matter of seconds.
You can even transfer those clips to an external storage, if you don't want to lose them forever. Furthermore, while screenshots don't take up hardly any space on their own, if you have hundreds of screenshots saved on the PlayStation 5, it all adds up.
Sometimes, gameplay clips and screenshots are automatically taken when you earn a prestigious Platinum Trophy.
Turn off the Auto-Capture for Gameplay and Screenshots
Thankfully, you can turn off the automatic gameplay/screenshot capture when you earn trophies. To do this, simply: Go to the console ‘Settings’, select ‘Captures and Broadcasts’, then ‘Captures’, ‘Auto-Captures’ and ‘Trophies’.
Once in these final settings, select ‘None’ for ‘Save Trophy Screenshots’ and ‘Save Trophy Videos’ to free up a ton of storage space going forward.
Of course, the easiest way to save space is by simply deleting games that you haven't played in a long time. Sure, it’s nice to have them there, ready to go, just in case.
But if you’ve not played it in months, delete it to make way for something that you will play. You can always reinstall it at a later date.
So, there you have it. Hopefully, those simple tips will help save plenty of PlayStation 5 storage space for the months ahead.
