The PlayStation 3 is now 17 years old, showing time waits for absolutely no one.

While the latest and greatest PlayStation 5 games are the talk of the town, like God Of War: Ragnarök, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and of course, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, there’s no doubt the PlayStation 3 was an equally great system.

Take a look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 below.

While it had a rough start due to a frankly ridiculous price at launch, it eventually blossomed into the best system of that generation. The Xbox 360 was great in its own right, boasting some top-notch titles like Halo 3, but the PS3 blew it out of the water when it came to exclusive games.

Arguably one of the best of the bunch was The Last Of Us, which went on to be one of the most successful PlayStation exclusives of all time, with a sequel that’s set to be remastered for PS5 at the start of the next year.

All in all, it was a great evolution and one that’s still fondly remembered and played to this day, though some of the classic PS3 games fans remember are yet to make the jump to current-gen platforms despite best attempts to promote backwards compatibility.

Fans of the system looked back at the console’s life on a Reddit post, sharing some of their favourite memories with the console as well as just how impressive it was for its time.

“What a moment in time. Massive generation jump and online gaming, trophy hunting, digital content was a wonderful evolution of gaming at the time," read one comment.

“I still remember my PS3. I switched from Xbox to PlayStation because the online was free. A month later Sony announced they were going to start charging for online. Good times," said another, while one fan wrote, "PS3 is retro, that's dope.”

Hard to think one day the PlayStation 5 will be the old console, and it really makes you wonder how much more advanced, and probably expensive, new-gen systems will get as time goes on.
