The heyday of the PlayStation 3 drew to a close a long time ago, but that certainly didn’t render the console as obsolete.
Certainly, it’s not receiving anything in the way of new releases, but there are plenty of users who aren’t willing to leave the nostalgia behind.
In 2023, it was revealed that the PS3 had a player base of approximately 2,000,000 active users.
While up-to-date figures aren’t readily available, I don’t think that number will have fallen too dramatically.

It could soon, however, as PS3 users fear that the console might be being killed off for good.
Several days ago, the PlayStation Store on PS3 consoles began displaying a concerning message that read, “This service is currently undergoing maintenance.”
Quite obviously, this means that users aren’t able to make any purchases, and the problem seems to be present on all stores including those within the European, Japanese, and North American territories.
As reported by Delisted Games, the store has retained limited functionality; you can apparently browse or search, but viewing a game’s listing will tend to either cause the message to pop up or the store to crash.

Additionally, download history is still accessible, so you can locate your previously purchased titles.
While this could merely just be a major update, the fact that Sony has been radio silent despite the problem persisting has led many to believe that the PlayStation Store could be shutting down for good on PS3 consoles.
Honestly, it’s really hard to say.
The fact that the PlayStation site doesn’t mention any kind of maintenance indicates perhaps that this downtime was unexpected.

If Sony was to pull the store, I personally think they’d give users ample warning, allowing them to make any last minute purchases.
It’s with all of this in mind that I’d say Sony was caught off guard by an unexpected issue.
The fact that this issue is affecting storefronts worldwide though is of concern, perhaps most significantly because it could reveal that the PS3 store is showing its age and if that is the case, perhaps the end is nigh.
While Sony seems quite happy to leave the PS3 store running, I doubt they’ll want to invest resources in overhauling it.

At the time of writing, the problem persists. Let’s hope we’re all overreacting and services resume by the end of the week.
