PlayStation 3 is on the verge of being officially dead after an update is killing its one remaining major app. Which begs the question, how much longer has the console got?
Sony released the PlayStation 3 in 2006, and while it may have had a slow start with major quality first-party titles, it will go down as one of my favourite consoles.
In terms of first-party exclusives, we had Naughty Dog’s Uncharted trilogy, not to mention The Last of Us. As well as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, God of War 3, LittleBigPlanet, Journey and much more.
On top of that, it had other cool features such as its Blu-ray player, dynamic themes, and tons of apps, including the WWE Network, Amazon’s Prime Video, and the topic of today’s discussion, Netflix.
PlayStation 3 Update to Remove Popular Streaming App
As brought to our attention by the Twitter user, Wario64, the Netflix streaming app is going to be killed next month on 2 March 2026. This, of course, means that on that date, you’ll have to stream your Netflix movies and series elsewhere.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love my PlayStation 3, and it has a place in my living room, but I rarely fire it up nowadays, especially to utilise streaming apps.

Where Else Can PlayStation Gamers Watch Netflix?
To be honest, I’d be somewhat surprised if I knew anyone who still watches Netflix through PlayStation 3, but I’m sure that there are some across the world. Typically, if you’re a Sony console gamer, you probably watch Netflix through the PS5 and PS4.
If by chance, the PlayStation 3 is the only console you currently own, you can still watch Netflix through PC, TVs, mobile phones and tablets, as well as the Xbox, to name a few.
The Netflix app launched on the PlayStation 3 in late 2010, so it's very impressive that it’s lasted nearly 16 years at this point. As for the PlayStation 4, Netflix arrived on the console's launch day in November 2013.
So it wouldn't surprise me if Netflix has a similar lifespan on the PlayStation 4, with it currently being 13 years old. It may even be cut short, with the PS5 being the most popular current Sony platform. Of course, when that inevitably happens, we’ll update you right away.
Discontinued in 2017, as for the PlayStation 3 console itself, while its online multiplayer still functions and it has the PS Store (with bare minimum support), it does feel like the writing has long been on the wall, that the console’s end is looming.
Sure, your PlayStation 3 console will always be playable, but in terms of online connectivity, it might be wise to prepare your goodbyes.
