Horizon 3 Quietly Confirmed, Aloy’s Finale Is on the Way

Guerrilla Games may have just quietly confirmed that Horizon 3 is on the way, which could be Aloy’s epic finale.

After months of speculation, Sony PlayStation and Guerrilla Games finally revealed the Horizon multiplayer spin-off, which we now know is called Horizon Hunters Gathering.

Horizon Hunters Gathering is a three-player co-op game where players embark on a hunt to take down the mechanical beasts, such as a Thunderjaw, a Tremortusk, and more.

Judging by its announcement trailer and what I’ve read, it looks like Sony and Guerrilla Games intend Horizon Hunters Gathering to be its answer to the Monster Hunter series.

Whether it achieves the same level of success as the Capcom franchise remains to be seen.

Will Horizon Hunters Gathering Be Free-to-Play?

While I’m not overly keen on its Fortnite-esque visuals, I believe Horizon Hunters Gathering has the potential to be a fun game when played with friends and family.

That being said, it’s curious that it wasn't mentioned whether it will be a paid-for game or free-to-play.

If Horizon Hunters Gathering isn't free-to-play, I hope that lessons will be learned from the colossal flop that is Concord, and potentially, Marathon, which hasn't been well-received by the community.

In my opinion, Horizon Hunters Gathering stands the best chance of being a success as a free-to-play game and implements a battle pass system similar to Fortnite.

I mean, the game already looks like Fortnite, so they might as well go the extra mile. Not to mention that Fortnite is the blueprint for how to be a successful free-to-play game.

What Does Horizon Hunters Gathering Mean for Horizon 3?

At this time, we can only speculate. But given the fact that the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel, Horizon Forbidden West and its Burning Shores expansion have set up Horizon 3, I’d be shocked if Guerrilla Games doesn't conclude that trilogy.

Following the reveal of Horizon Hunters Gathering, as spotted by GamesRadar, in the near 10-minute announcement trailer, Guerrilla Games’ studio director, Jan-Bart Van Beek, said: “I want to be very clear about one thing. We absolutely love making single-player games, and we're going to keep making them.”

He added, “We also have this long-standing dream to try to do something different. Our own take on how you can explore the world of Horizon together as a team of machine hunters,” when referring to the reasoning behind Horizon Hunters Gathering.

Of course, the safe assumption would be that Jan-Bart Van Beek is referring to Horizon 3, but as much as I want to see that game, a part of me is also hoping that Killzone is in his thoughts.

At the time of writing, Horizon Hunters Gathering doesn't have a release date, but it is expected to launch at some point this year on PC and PlayStation 5.

A closed beta test will also take place towards the end of this month.
