PlayStation have historically been pretty good at providing free experiences to players to supplement their paid PlayStation Plus offering. Back in June, this saw Sony give everyone the chance to login and play online multiplayer for free, without a PlayStation Plus subscription.
A new announcement is now doing the rounds on social media claiming that another event promising free multiplayer is scheduled to run this weekend (8-10 August).
Over on Reddit, one user shared the official looking correspondence which detailed exactly what the supposed event is going to look like.
"Head online this weekend and take on the world - at no extra cost," the notice said. "From August 8-10 multiplayer modes in games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, NBA 2K25 and EA SPORTS College Football 26 will be open to all PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners, with no PlayStation Plus membership required."

While this obvously sounds brilliant, there has been nothing remotely resembling official confirmation from Sony that this is actually happening. Additionally, there are some odd errors in the post that make it seem less than legitimate, with the most obvious example being the wrong cover art used for College Football.
With no real reason to believe the announcement, it's quite safe to condemn this one to the not happening pile for the time being.
It's not all bad news though, as the 15th Anniversary of PlayStation Plus is happening right now and Sony are doing plenty to mark the occasion. This includes some trials for brand new games, impressive exclusive discounts on games and expansions like Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and a series of tournaments in the platform's most popular multiplayer titles.
To get involved, simply head to your PlayStation dashboard and navigate to the 15th Anniversary section, where you should find all the information about everything on offer.
