Destiny and original Halo developer Bungie is rumoured to be developing a remake of a beloved FPS that none of us saw coming.

Bungie is best known for creating the Halo series, which began in 2001 as a launch title for the original Xbox with Halo: Combat Evolved. This relationship would continue until its last game in the series, Halo: Reach in 2010.

When Bungie left Microsoft and Xbox, it was to work on a new RPG looter shooter FPS, Destiny, for Activision, released in 2014. This was proven to be a very successful property with players all over the world coming together to take on its Strike and Raid missions for some precious exotic loot. Destiny would later get a successful sequel in 2017.

Bungie has had it rough lately

Earlier this year, Bungie launched a revival of its classic FPS series from the 90s, Marathon. Instead of this being a straight-up shooter, it was reimagined into an extraction shooter, perhaps trying to capitalise on other successful games of that genre, such as Escape from Tarkov.

However, to say that Marathon has not been well received by the community would be an understatement. Despite having promising numbers at launch, the player count quickly declined, and now it appears Marathon is on life support, with the writing on the proverbial wall regarding its continued demise.

The fast decline of Marathon wasn't helped by the fact that Bungie and its owner, Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced that all content support for Destiny 2 has ended. This again did not go down well with the community, sparking a massive backlash from fans and a petition urging Sony to reconsider its decision.

Could Sony change its fortunes by remaking a popular FPS?

Other than giving fans Destiny 3, which feels like a surefire way to win back loyalty, it’s reported by content creator Trance that Bungie is rumoured to be remaking a popular looter shooter from 2009, Borderlands.

This would be very surprising if true, because the Borderlands property is owned by 2K and has nothing to do with Bungie or Sony Interactive Entertainment, so how is this possible?

While Bungie was taken over by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2022 for $3.6billion, the studio has remained independent, to an extent. So in theory, unless Sony were to pull a massive trump card preventing the move, Bungie is pretty much free to work on whichever video game series it chooses. Unlike the likes of Destiny 3, which Sony holds a final say with, as it is part of the 2022 acquisition.

Previously, other than a spin-off from Telltale Games, the Borderland series has primarily been developed by Gearbox, so if rumours of Bungie developing a remake of the 2009 original are true, it would be very surprising news indeed. The report claims that Sony is aware of the remake and talks are being held with Gearbox.

What could this Borderlands remake look like?

It’s claimed that this won't be a typical faithful remake and will incorporate live-service elements inspired by Destiny. It’s also said that for Sony to allow Bungie to develop the Borderlands remake, PlayStation would have some form of exclusive rights.

Whether this is a strict first-party exclusive, a timed exclusive or related to exclusive content remains to be seen. Furthermore, the Borderlands remake would remain an open-world game and could be supported with seasonal content similar to Destiny.

That all being said, it’s important to consider that these rumours are unconfirmed and should be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. We’ll keep you updated if more concrete information is discovered.
