Cyberpunk 2077 fans losing their minds over surprise free download

It’s a great game, now

Cyberpunk 2077 fans are losing their minds over a surprise PlayStation announcement earlier this week.

On Wednesday, 9 July 2025, Sony announced the new arrivals for PlayStation Plus, in particular the Extra and Premium tiers. In recent months, especially, it feels like the PS Plus subscription service has been a bit hit and miss.

However, the games coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium this month include some bangers, headlined by CD Projekt RED’s sci-fi RPG, Cyberpunk 2077.

“Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure RPG set in the megalopolis of Night City, where you play as a cyberpunk mercenary wrapped up in a do-or-die fight for survival,” reads the synopsis of the game. "The relationships you forge and the choices you make will shape the story and the world around you. Legends are made here. What will yours be?"

It’s hard to believe that when Cyberpunk 2077 originally launched in 2020, it was deemed to be of such poor quality that it was removed from the PlayStation Store for roughly six months before it returned. Now, four years later, it’s considered to be one of the best sci-fi RPGs of all time.

So when Sony announced that Cyberpunk 2077 is available right now with PlayStation Plus, it garnered a welcome response from the video game community.

“This is peak,” said KreciQFNC, replying to a tweet from the official Cyberpunk 2077 account.

“Such a great game! My favourite of all time!” exclaimed woodwurker39.

“People should give this game a try because it is truly a masterpiece,” suggested TheRealAnix.

“Without doubt, a once-in-a-generation game,” wrote DudeNoWayGaming.

“Love you,” declared the overjoyed JustJoseph30.

Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion, Phantom Liberty, are out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. We'll have our fingers crossed that Cyberpunk 2077 is announced for Xbox Game Pass next.
