Beloved PlayStation 1 Gem Quietly Lands On PS5 Out of Nowhere

What a nice little surprise

I’ll always have fond feelings for the PlayStation 1 given that it’s the console that forms all of my earliest gaming memories.

I can’t say that toddler me ever picked up Fear Effect though; I was more of a Crash Bandicoot kind of kid.

If Fear Effect is, however, a title that gets those nostalgic juices flowing then you’re in luck, my friend.

This beloved title has just quietly landed on PlayStation 4 and 5 consoles, bringing the retro hit to modern audiences.

Developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment, Fear Effect originally landed in 2000.

The action-adventure title was set in the year 2050 and saw the player control three mercenaries - Hana, Glas, and Deke - within Hong Kong.

If you recall, it was Wee Ming Lam whom the trio were after, a woman who went missing just before her 18th birthday.

The idea wasn’t to save her though; instead, Hana, Glas, and Deke sought to ransom Wee Ming Lam off to her father, the most powerful Triad leader in the city.

Extortion quickly turned to disaster, with our three primary mercenaries soon coming to realise that they messed with the wrong man.

Well, in a surprise twist of events, the classic game has just been shadow-dropped on PS4 and PS5 as well as PC and Nintendo Switch courtesy of Limited Run Games.

The port was actually announced around a year ago, but we’ve heard very little since then.

The good news is that it’s finally arrived and will set you back just $9.99 / £8.99; that’s not a bad price for a seven to nine hour slice of nostalgia.

I’m afraid you’ll have to settle for a digital edition as Limited Run’s physical copies have already sold out.

PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch physical pre-orders previously went live at a cost of $34.99.

Given the name Limited Run Games, you’ll be unsurprised to learn that it’s unlikely that we’ll see another physical pressing.

That digital version won’t be going anywhere though, so head on over to the PlayStation Store.
