Halloween is almost upon us, offering up the perfect chance to celebrate all things spooky.
You donât need to be a fan of traditional horror, however, in order to join in the fun, as the scaredy cats among us can enjoy horror of the cozy variety.
Thatâs precisely what free new offering âBlood Magicâ brings to the table, a new mod expansion for Stardew Valley players.
It goes without saying that in order to play âBlood Magicâ, youâll need to be playing Stardew Valley on PC but if you meet that criteria, you can download this project now from NexusMods.

Created by modder CozyPsychologist, âBlood Magicâ adds creepy new mechanics alongside a thrilling questline.
âSomething ancient is stirring beneath Stardew Valley,â begins the synopsis. âWhat begins as an invitation to experiment with forbidden rituals gradually becomes something much more sinister.â
It continues, âStrange dreams interrupt your sleep. Hooded figures appear where no one should be standing. The Wizard grows increasingly concerned, and a mysterious researcher named Dr. Aldric Voss arrives in town and suspects that the valley is hiding a history far older than anyone realises.â
Jump scares and nightmarish visions await players who develop a high blood debt

It didnât take long for this mod to capture my attention, and Iâm sure youâre already seeing why.
âBlood Magicâ introduces a very cool magic system which essentially sees players trade HP for powerful buffs.
Thereâs also a new NPC in the form of Aldric Voss, several new locations, a branching progression path concerning âforbidden knowledgeâ, and a major boss fight.
Youâll need to reach combat level four in the base game in order to begin this new questline, at which point, The Dark Tome will be mailed to you - an ancient book of ritual magic.
You find out that the aforementioned Voss, a forensic alchemist, has been investigating strange and unique phenomena and, of course, you get roped into said investigations.
Voss is incredibly well crafted as an NPC, with his own campsite, daily routine, dialogue, and friendship events.
Deepening your friendship with him is key to progressing through âBlood Magicâ and uncovering the modâs darker secrets.
The creator of the mod teases âa complete character arcâ that extends âinto the storyâs aftermathâ. I feel itâs also important to point out that thereâs an impressive 10 Heart Events on offer here, plus extra story and quest related events.
âBlood Magicâ introduces the Sacrificial Altar and Blood Essence Harvester machines which are pretty self explanatory. Be careful if you use the Sacrificial Altar; power always has a price.
Performing rituals, you see, contributes to your blood debt and as your blood debt increases - displayed on the UI - youâll experience disturbing dreams, visions of cultists, supernatural disturbances and jump scares, and more.
If jump scares have put you off, they can be toggled off in the modâs settings for a slightly more relaxing experience.

As for new locations, thereâs, of course, Vossâ camp as well as a hidden temple and a final encounter area where youâll come face to face with The Unending. Yikes.
âBlood Magicâ is safe to install mid playthrough of Stardew Valley and no AI was used during its creation, which is always nice to hear. The modder describes it as a âlabour of loveâ.
Itâs early days for the mod project but thereâs already plenty of hype surrounding it.
âI canât wait to try this one out,â âThis is amazing,â and, âA beautiful and lovely horror mod,â are among some of the early comments.
I never thought Iâd be turning to Stardew Valley for spooks, but âBlood Magicâ is the unexpectedly brilliant addition I never knew I needed.
