Red Dead Redemption 2 gets huge free survival overhaul, completely changing how Arthur lives

Red Dead Redemption 2 already has some fantastic survival-inspired gameplay elements.

Perhaps not quite to the extent of a game dedicated to the genre, but compared to the original Red Dead Redemption and even the Grand Theft Auto series, Rockstar Games set itself a new standard with Red Dead Redemption 2 in that respect.

In the base game, while they’re not life threatening needs, Arthur needs to eat, drink, and sleep to maintain and improve his overall health. However, new mod ‘RDR2 Care Overhaul - Player And Horse Care’ takes those core survival elements to a whole new level.

‘RDR2 Care Overhaul - Player And Horse Care’ changes how you play

The mod in question is created by RcnYn, and it’s actually an improved version of the mod they created in June 2026. The most recently updated ‘RDR2 Care Overhaul - Player And Horse Care’ is available to download now via NexusMods.

This free mod does pretty much what it says on the tin, with the most current version of ‘RDR2 Care Overhaul - Player And Horse Care’, 1.0.3.1.0, making a whole host of improvements not only to Arthur Morgan and his horse, but also to John Marston.

Every new feature in the ‘RDR2 Care Overhaul’ mod

• It has a proper rest system: Arthur and John will need regular rest, just like you would in real life, especially if either character has been particularly active during the day. Both will need to get some sleep wherever and whenever they can.
• There’s an incorporated hunger mechanic: A hunger mechanic has been connected to the existing nutrition system in the game. Whether it’s cooked food at a camp, a saloon or elsewhere, it will contribute towards your overall health.
• Stay hydrated: You’ll have to make sure that Arthur and John drink regularly; otherwise, their Health and Stamina will gradually deplete. Increased activity will also make the need for hydration more important. They can now even kneel beside a natural water source to drink, fill a canteen or have a wash. However, make sure to boil dirty water to get the most benefits from it.
• Carrying the weight of the world: The weight system has been improved, with heavier items depleting Stamina faster. Depending on the weight of the items you’re carrying and whether you’re walking or running, the weight system will adjust accordingly.
• Deeper horse care: Make sure to keep on top of providing your loyal horse with enough food and drink, especially when they’ve had a busy day too. Horses can also drink from natural water sources, eat vegetation and rest autonomously. Their hooves will also gradually wear down, so make sure you keep an eye on them.
• This is a seamless mod: Perhaps best of all, this mod seamlessly integrates with Story Mode and can even be configured exactly how you want to play Red Dead Redemption 2.

As always, this mod, like all others, is exclusive to the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. If you don't have a PC, you can enjoy the game as originally intended on PlayStation and Xbox.
