While Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t a horror game, it is full of its fair share of scary moments.

Whether it’s being attacked by a grizzly bear, encountering the vampire of Saint Denis, stumbling across the night folk, or spotting the ghost of Agnes Dowd, you’re guaranteed to get your heebies jeebied at some point.

In fact, it happens more often than is perhaps preferable for most players.

If, though, you’re a fan of all things spooky and you yearn to up the ante when it comes to horror, you might want to download ‘The Watchers’ from NexusMods.

Created by user gunnamon, this free add-on is pretty simple but the introduction of a single mechanic can totally transform Red Dead Redemption 2 into a terrifying nightmare.

The Watchers Will Relentlessly Stalk You

‘The Watchers’ is described as an “ambient horror mod” that sees players stalked from a distance.

“Ever feel like you’re being watched?” the creator asks.

“Every night between the hours of 11pm and 3am there's a chance The Watchers will come. They try to stay far away, but they are always watching.

“It's best not to let them know if you see them. Random creepy NPCs will follow you from a distance through the night.”

The creator adds, “This is not a mod that you will notice very often, but they will always notice you. Luckily they leave once the sun rises.”

Well I already feel unsettled. As outlined, the mod’s creepy NPCs will appear at a distance at night, stalking you across the game’s map and never relenting.

Given the distance aspect, you shouldn’t expect a major jumpscare. But spotting the same faces always watching from a distant window or open field? That could be pretty unnerving.

As the creator outlines, you’re encouraged not to approach The Watchers. After scouring the modder’s notes, it looks like the NPCs will attack if they see you, for example, watching them back via binoculars.

It sounds as if one of the NPCs might shoot at you whilst the vast majority are armed with knives.

The mod has already been downloaded by hundreds of Red Dead Redemption 2 players who seem to be having a great time with the add-on.

“Absolute peak,” remarked one player, while another added, “What a great job. I always wanted someting like that. I hope you can make more mods like these make RDR2 scarier.”

“Hell yes dude we need more horror mods for Red Dead 2, it's a perfect world for it,” someone else said.

It looks as if The Watchers are set automatically at a 10% spawn rate but you can increase that to 100% via the mod’s files.

Between 14 and 24 NPCs will currently spawn, but gunnamon has plenty of plans to expand the mod in the future.

That could entail increasing the retaliatory actions of The Watchers. Gunnamon also made reference to perhaps increasing the spawn rate in naturally spooky areas of the game’s map like the locales inhabited by the Murfree Brood.

For now though, this is an awesome addition to Red Dead Redemption 2 for those playing on PC.
