Forget Half-Life 3, This New Half-Life 2 Remaster Will Keep us Busy

One of the best just got better

Half-Life 2, one of the greatest games of all time, just got even better after 21 years.

Much like its 1998 predecessor, 2004’s Half-Life 2 is considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time, as reflected by its scores of 96 and 9.1, from critics and users, respectively, on the aggregate website, Metacritic.

Even to this day, Half-Life 2 is an amazing game with its lush visuals and fun gameplay barely feeling like it’s aged a day. Half-Life 2 is not only playable on PC but also on Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility with Valve’s The Orange Box compilation.

Following the launch of Half-Life 2, it was going to receive three expansions: Episode One, Episode Two, and, finally, Episode Three. Sadly, however, we never got the third episode, leaving fans on a cliffhanger that lasted 13 years until the arrival of Half-Life: Alyx.

Sure, 2007’s Half-Life 2: Episode Three finally being addressed in 2020’s Half-Life: Alyx was great for some. The major problem with that is Half-Life: Alyx is not only a PC exclusive that requires a beast of a system, but it’s also a VR-only game. But I digress.

There have been lots of rumours floating around recently that Half-Life 3 might be revealed soon. Well, I say “recently”; those rumours have been circulating for years, but at the very least they’ve been gaining traction over the last few weeks.

Half-Life 2 Has Never Looked Better!

There’s every chance that gossip of Half-Life 3 being announced is smoke without fire, so I won't be getting my hopes up.

Thankfully, if you’re a PC gamer, you can take advantage of the fantastic modding community, and one such modding compilation makes Half-Life 2 look like an officially released modern remaster.

As showcased on the YouTube channel MxBenchmarkPC, powered by an NVIDIA RTX 5080 and NVIDIA’s modding tools, Half-Life 2 has never looked better. To see the vast improvements, the video in question compares the OG release to the remaster.

My words do not do this Half-Life 2 remaster justice, so please enjoy the video in this article and see for yourself.

Hopefully, experiencing this Half-Life 2 fan-made remaster should keep us busy until Half-Life 3 ever arrives. You never know, it might actually be revealed at The Game Awards tonight, as overly optimistic as that might be.

At the very least, I’d just love for Valve to announce Half-Life: Alyx for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S with optional VR. I think console gamers have waited long enough.
