GoldenEye 007 fans can now pick up a new free alternative which is available on PC.
A few weeks back, we told you about GoldenEye: Source, a free remake of the original GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 which is powered by the Source Engine.
While GoldenEye: Source is a fantastic game to play if you’re a fan of the original or of Source Engine mods, it still doesn’t quite beat playing the Nintendo 64 version.
Thankfully, you can now play the best James Bond game of all time in its original form, thanks to new decompilation project which has been released on PC.

GoldenEye Recomp v1.0 was released earlier this month on GitHub by developer SunJaycy, who calls it a passion project of theirs.
As SunJaycy explains, the release is a “native PC recompilation of the Xbox 360 version of GoldenEye 007.”
This means the game isn’t being run via an emulator, but is rather a native executable that you can download and run from your PC.
It allows new features to come to the game that may or may not be possible via emulation, such as modern gamepad support, widescreen resolutions, and a 60 FPS frame rate. You can even play the game online against other players, which wasn’t possible in the original.

GoldenEye Recomp was built from a decompilation of the Xbox 360 version of GoldenEye 007. This was a version developed by Rare and 4J Studios in 2008, which included such features like online multiplayer and updated graphics, while still being built off the N64 original.
This port was intended to be released as a game on the Xbox Live Arcade marketplace, but was later cancelled a few months before release due to Nintendo, MGM, and Microsoft being unable to come to an agreement.
A second attempt to port the game to modern platforms was made when Rare Replay released in 2015, which is a collection of 30 games made by Rare over the years compiled into a single release.
However, these plans were also canned for the same problem of Nintendo, MGM, and Microsoft not being able to come to an agreement.
It wasn’t until 2023 where GoldenEye 007 made a return for modern systems, coming to the Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo 64 classics library, as well as Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One via Rare Replay.
This new PC decompilation means that a native version of GoldenEye 007 is also now available to play on PC, which is also a huge win for games preservation as the game is now available for more people to play.
