The Legend of Zelda games aren’t built for multiplayer and yet they work surprisingly well when you can get it working.
Mad lads on PC have been on a mission to add multiplayer modes to games that have always been single-player experiences. Just the other day, we saw someone had modded Spyro the Dragon 3: Year of the Dragon to support co-op with Crash Bandicoot of all characters.
One of the best examples we’ve seen so far though has to be The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, which you can now play with a friend.
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker is widely regarded as one of the best games in the series. It's a coming-of-age story where, as usual, Link is swept away from his normal life and must thwart Ganondorf’s plans of domination.
You can play the OG GameCube version on the Nintendo Switch 2 via Nintendo Switch Online, but you can also play it on PC via the Dolphin emulator.

Note that in order to play it you’ll need to provide your own ripped copy of the game. Don’t just pirate a ROM from somewhere online.
If you can get the game working on PC though be sure to check out this new “real-time visual multiplayer” mod by Stephen Horton.
The mod is exactly what you’d expect it to be. It enables Zelda: Wind Waker to be played with a friend.

There are a few technical hoops you need to jump through first but most of the work is done for you by running the program Horton shared on Github.
At the time of writing, it’s still a work-in-progress, meaning you might encounter problems later into your playthrough that prevent you from progressing. In theory, though the entire game can be played in multiplayer, and you’re not just restricted to two players either.
It’s a fantastic achievement and it’s only going to get better as time goes on. We’re looking forward to seeing how the mod progresses and whether anyone can actually achieve a full playthrough.
We also love the fact that these Zelda multiplayer mods are basically the second-coming of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure.
Four Swords Adventure was a GameCube title also starring Toon Link, as he’s now known, that could be played solo but for the best experience, you’d want three friends to join you.
It’s wild that the game hasn’t been added to the Nintendo Switch Online library yet, as with online multiplayer enabled, it could very well be one of the best Zelda games on the Nintendo Switch…
Hopefully, Nintendo brings the game back eventually but in the meantime, the Wind Waker multiplayer mod will do for now.
