The Nintendo Wii is the pinnacle of Nintendo’s creativity for me and its potential return has me very excited.
Every man and his dog wanted a Nintendo Wii when they first came out and while its successor, the Wii U, wasn’t as popular it didn’t diminish what Nintendo achieved with this legendary console.
Now it seems it’ll be making a comeback through the Nintendo Switch, as it’ll apparently be one of three consoles coming to Nintendo Switch Online. Three consoles, I hear you say? Keep reading to find out.
So far Nintendo Switch Online’s most expensive tier allows users to play games from the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive, Nintendo GameCube and Game Boys.

Joining this roster will apparently be the SEGA CD, Nintendo DS and finally the Nintendo Wii. Take that with a pinch of salt though as Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet.
Whether all three are planned to drop at the same time or see a staggered release is also unknown.
Now I find this incredibly exciting. I feel like I’m one of the only people who actually likes Nintendo Switch Online and more reasons to keep my subscription are welcome, but, I can see these new additions being a double-edged sword.
Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Problem
More choices over what retro console to play on is great as while I own pretty much every console going it’s easier to load a game up on my Nintendo Switch than it is to pull out and plug in a different one.
However, three new classic consoles is bound to lead to another price increase, and I don’t think Nintendo Switch owners are going to take too kindly to that.
Another problem is the game library. As much as I love Nintendo Switch Online the rate in which new games are added is absolutely atrocious.
Even when a new game or two does get added to the line-up there’s a good chance it’s one you’ve either not heard of nor care to play.
I was so excited to see the GameCube added to the service and yet after months and months there are only a handful of games playable through it despite so many being teased when the addition was announced.
With three more consoles piled on top it’s going to make every new game announcement all the more disappointing when it’s some obscure third-party title rather than something of actual value.
