7 Wii Games We Need on Nintendo Switch Online ASAP

We’d love to see these Wii games return!

The Nintendo Switch Online is continually expanding, but it’s missing one beloved platform, the Wii and should this day come, we’ll let you know what seven games we’d love to see in its library.

Since the lovable 8-Bit NES first arrived in 1983, before coming to the US and Europe, Nintendo has been a mainstay in our homes for decades, with each new console advancing on the last with visuals and gameplay innovation.

For each generation, Nintendo has been a top performer when it comes to sales, with the likes of the original Switch selling over 155 million units worldwide, the handheld DS with just over 154 million and the topic of today’s feature, the Wii, just over 101.6 million.

The Nintendo Wii Was the Ultimate Family Console

One of the reasons the Nintendo Wii sold so well is that it was the ultimate family console for all ages. Whether it’s exploring outer space in Super Mario Galaxy, being chomped on by zombies in Resident Evil or your granny getting consecutive strikes in Wii Sports bowling.

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion already has Nintendo 64 and GameCube titles, so the next logical step would be the aforementioned Wii. With that in mind, here are seven games that we’d love to see come to the yet-to-be-announced Nintendo Wii library.

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirit

Starting off with an obscure choice from Editor Sara

Developed and published by the indie studio Over the Top Games, NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits is a delightful, but likely forgotten, side-scrolling platform game that launched on the Wii digital store.

Inspired by Greek mythology, NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits featured physics-based puzzles, challenging levels, and charming visuals that kinda reminded me of Journey. This might not be the biggest game on this list, but for one that was potentially overlooked by many, it deserves another chance to shine.

My Pokémon Ranch

A classic for a reason!

My Pokémon Ranch is one of the many quirky spin-off games in the Pokémon series that has Animal Crossing vibes.

Released on the Wii digital store in 2008, much like Pokémon Box, players were able to transfer their favourite creatures from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl into a cute virtual ranch to interact with their Mii avatar. This might not be your typical game, but if Nintendo can find a way to incorporate My Pokémon Ranch into the Switch online library, it could be a fun, nostalgic trip to share with your friends.

Wii Sports + Resort

It had to be said, the Nintendo Switch one isn't the OG

Two of the most popular games on the Nintendo Wii, that would more than earn a place in the Online library. As I mentioned earlier, Wii Sports is the ultimate family game, whether your wanted to play bowling, tennis, golf and more. Wii Sports Resort launched two years later in 2009, and introduced new games such as archery, wakeboarding and cycling, to name a few. Simply put, both of these games have to be included. These will always be two of the best games to get a competitive gathering of family and friends in front the TV to make some memories.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Ultimate is great, but...

Considered by many to be the best entry in Nintendo’s fighting series with a 93 Metacritic score, 2008’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl has to be included in the Online library. Plus, it’s the only game in the series for the Wii, so there is that. I miss the story mode, Subspace Emissary, which never made a return, even in Ultimate. Can you really call it Ultimate without a story mode? Other than being a high-octane brawling game that is a blast to play against friends, there’s no official way to play this game online, with Nintendo shutting down Wii online connection in 2014. So Nintendo, make sure that Super Smash Bros. Brawl is one of the first Wii games available in the library. Please.

4/7

Kirby’s Epic Yarn

A cosy classic

Kirby’s Epic Yarn was released on the Wii in 2008 (before coming to the 3DS in 2019). This is a charming side-scrolling platform that Super Mario fans adored, but with a twist. It’s a bit difficult to explain to give this game justice, but Kirby would use strands of yarn to traverse each level and may even uncover a hidden treasure or two. Kirby could even use yarn to create vehicles, such as a UFO. Kirby’s Epic Yarn is a timeless classic that has earned the right to be enjoyed by a new generation of gamers.

5/7

Sonic and the Black Knight

Sorry, I liked it.

A follow-up to Sonic and the Secret Rings, while not open world, its map design made me feel like there was a lot more to explore than meets the eye. Perhaps in some ways, this was an inspiration to 2022’s Sonic Frontiers. Inspired by King Arthur and the Round Table, Sonic and the Black Knight may be a bit of a meme nowadays, but it still deserves some love. It incorporated the high-speed and intense platform action that fans loved with a blend of hack and slash, perhaps akin to the likes of Devil May Cry. Sonic and the Black Knight is also the only mainline game in the series to not have Dr Eggman as the main protagonist, which is reason enough to experience this game once more. Plus, more importantly, it’s a lot of fun. Honest.

6/7

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Hear me out...

Now, this is a bit of an odd choice for me. Not that I wouldn't want 2006’s The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess to appear in the Online library, because of course I would.

However, not at the expense of a proper retail release, it has to be said. Twilight Princess is one of the most highly requested modern remasters that fans of the series would love to see.

Sure, it did get a remaster on the Wii U, but considering that console was a bit of a flop, there may have been loads of fans who missed that release, as well as the versions that launched on the GameCube and Wii.

The Wii version is probably the best of all the ports, because it made fantastic use of its Nunchuck and Remote motion controls. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess would be a great addition to the Online library and would likely be adored by a new legion of fans.

7/7

The sheer volume of Wii masterpieces still trapped on legacy hardware is a crime, so we really hope the rumours that Nintendo Wii games are coming to Nintendo Switch 2 Online is true.

Nintendo has the tech, we have the subscription, and considering the console is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, it's about time.

Which of these Wii legends would you shadow drop first if you were in charge? Did I miss anything out?
