Rumours are swirling that Nintendo is preparing a Direct showcase for next week, and it’s causing many to believe we’re getting to the point where several new Switch 2 games will be unveiled.

While it’s looking like next week’s possible Nintendo Direct will focus on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, this isn’t stopping Animal Crossing fans from hoping news of a new game is up next.

Of course, a new Nintendo console means visiting the classic franchises from the Japanese company, including Animal Crossing.

It feels like it has been a lifetime since we were all playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons during COVID, and so some players think we’ll get some details on the next iteration soon.

Heck, maybe it isn’t a Direct for Metroid, and indeed will focus on first-party titles to come, Nintendo hasn’t revealed anything yet.

Over on Reddit, one fan commented, “I'm gonna preemptively start banging the drum for the next Animal Crossing.”

“Hoping it’s a major IP title like Animal Crossing or something,” said another fan.

Is it wrong of us to get our hopes up? After all, Nintendo has so many games up their sleeves for the new hardware, and they’ve got to be shown off soon, even if it’s just to note that they’re in development.

Players are desperate for news, and there are several series that would set social media ablaze with an announcement.

We can’t forget that it’s almost the 40th anniversary of Mario, so perhaps all the Animal Crossing fans will be disappointed to see something about our favourite plumber and hero.

Supposedly, the Nintendo Direct will happen on 11 September, so we won’t have long to wait, and we’ll be sat with our fingers crossed we get to see something of the cosy island hopping franchise.

Let’s just hope the next one doesn’t come with a worldwide pandemic, eh?
