For a brief but fun hour on Saturday, someone managed to convince the Grand Theft Auto VI community that footage from Rockstar Games’ upcoming title had leaked.

Given how impressive this “leak” looks and how much time and effort clearly went into pulling this off, it’s not hard to see how folks were fooled. I reckon I’d have fallen for it too.

Here we go again, check out the trailer for GTA VI below

Alright, let’s work backwards. Several outlets posted that a gameplay clip from GTA VI had leaked on Saturday night, like this article from TheGamer’s George Foster.

The clip started making the rounds after it was posted by a few different GTA VI Twitter accounts, such as the account @GTA6_x.

“Car brands are from the GTA 6 franchise,” commented @GTA_x, “we have the Rage engine motion blur, the coordinates make sense with the Portofino tower in the back. The UI makes sense, we have the real CCTV template and debug menu.”

Pretty convincing honestly, which is why a lot of folks were surprised when the person who faked it (a Discord user going by the name “Long Long Time”) came forward to admit the truth.

In a thread over on the r/GTA6 subreddit detailing the proof of the fake leak, several users were less than thrilled that they’d been successfully fooled.

“Peak unemployed activities” commented user UnluckyGamer505.

“You could jumpscare that guy by showing him a job application” replied user dominator-23.

The funny thing is, I wouldn’t be surprised if this does actually land this fella a job.

This is incredible work. I think people wouldn’t have figured out that it was fake for ages if they hadn’t come forward to admit it themselves.

Whenever Grand Theft Auto VII does come out, don’t be surprised if you see this dude’s name in the credits.
