Could the veiled announcements for Borderlands 4 finally be over, leaving us with only official confirmations? It would appear so, now that Gearbox Studios has been purchased by Take-Two Interactive.

In late February, Borderlands 4 was announced in one of the weirdest ways possible, with Gearbox’s founder speaking of it being the “greatest thing” the developers have ever done. It was a bold and unusual way to reveal that a game was in the works and, as such, fans were tentatively hopeful.

Now that Gearbox has been purchased by Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two, it has been made officially known that the next Borderlands is in “active development”. This can be seen in Take-Two's statement, in which it says, “Gearbox and 2K in active development on next instalment in Borderlands series.”

David Ismailer, the 2K president, added, “We are thrilled to welcome Randy Pitchford and his team of passionate, talented developers to 2K and we look forward to releasing numerous projects in the future as colleagues. We have loved partnering with Gearbox on every iteration of the Borderlands franchise and are excited to be in active development on the next instalment in the series.”

Now that Gearbox can “ascend” to its next level, the Borderlands fandom waits with bated breath to learn solid details about what the next Borderlands adventure compromises of. Before that happens, though, all focus will be on the upcoming Borderlands film, due to be released 9 August. Whether it lives up to the fandom’s expectations, that remains to be seen; so far, the jury is split over how loyal to the franchise it will be.

Bickering will likely occur, however, at least gamers can rest easy knowing that another game-based exertion of the action-romping, mayhem-catching franchise will happen. It’s official. What its final form will take, though, is still enigmatic.
