It sure did feel like we were on the precipice of change when it came to big screen adaptations of video games. Earlier this year, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 went on to become the most successful video game adaptation of all time and everything that we’re seeing from HBO’s take on The Last of Us looks very promising indeed.

This week, we reverted back to the old ways though when Netflix dropped the clanger that is Resident Evil. Fair to say, it hasn’t gone down well at all. With so many more adaptations in the pipeline, we need to stay positive - and more are on the way as Nintendo have unveiled a brand new movie studio.

Check out the brand new trailer for Amazon’s upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power below.

Following in the footsteps of PlayStation, Nintendo have officially announced their new film studio. The Japanese gaming giant is in the process of acquiring CG animation and motion capture studio Dynamo Pictures which it plans to rebrand as Nintendo Pictures.

Nintendo is currently creating a major screen adaption of Super Mario Bros starring Chris Pratt. In case you missed it, the rumoured plot sounds wild which I guess is perfect considering the cursed casting. This film has been made in partnership with Illumination Entertainment but it looks like Nintendo may want more autonomy going forwards.

Tokyo-based studio Dynamo Pictures have provided motion capture for a number of gaming projects including Persona 5 and Death Stranding. They also animated Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch.

Nintendo intends to complete the buyout by 3 October. As such, it’s safe to assume that we should expect plenty of Nintendo IPs to get the big screen treatment in the coming years, and they surely have plenty of franchises to play with. I could see The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing lending themselves nicely to animated films. This is exciting stuff.
