The latest movie in the Shrek Cinematic Universe (not an official name but I'm hoping it sticks) has arrived, and is already being hailed as one of the best films of the year. No, seriously though.

While we haven't had a mainline Shrek movie since 2010's Shrek Forever After, Dreamworks refuses to give up on the green ogre. So, while Shrek 5 lingers in development hell, it's down to other familiar faces to carry the torch.

Enter Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, a movie that I admit I was ready to write off the moment I heard of it. Clearly I'm a moron. At the time of writing, the Shrek spinoff has a critic score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 98%. This makes it one of the best reviewed movies of the year.

So what exactly are the critics saying about Puss In Boots: The Last Wish? Lots of good things, obviously, but let's dive in a little deeper.

"Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a fun-filled adventure packed with comedic moments, poignant life lessons, and some wacky surprises," writes Culture Mix. "This sequel is an instant classic that charms with a talented voice cast, stunning visuals, and a very entertaining story."

"The stakes may be more serious this time around, but the film’s every bit as amusing as you’d expect from the clever-as-ever team at DreamWorks Animation," Variety adds.

Getting to the heart of it, IndieWire observes: "Perhaps what makes The Last Wish a cut above the rest is the deftness with which it eases the audience into the Lesson of the Day format of most animated children’s movies."

Heck, IGN even gave the movie a 9/10 and hailed it as the Shrek franchises answer to Logan. Having not yet seen The Last Wish I can't say for sure how accurate a comparison this is, but I cannot wait to find out.
