A new teaser trailer for Spider-Man spinoff Morbius has arrived, and it seems our vampiric antihero is part of a much larger universe.
Morbius stars Jared Leto as Doctor Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist whose attempts to cure his rare blood disease transform him into a “living vampire”. Morbius has tangled with Spidey countless times in the comics, but it’s currently unclear where exactly this big screen version of the character fits into the grand scheme of things.

The original Morbius trailer has a handful of easter eggs, including a Daily Bugle front page that brands Spider-Man a murderer (a reference to the end of No Way Home?) plus a surprise appearance for Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes/Vulture. While it certainly looks like Morbius could take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the latest trailer muddies the waters by teasing two villains that have yet to appear in the MCU.

In a recently released Sony Pictures Vignette ahead of the full trailer dropping later today, the Daily Bugle once again hints at what’s to come. A ‘Who Is Morbius’ edition of the Spidey-hating newspaper has two more interesting headlines: ‘Rhino on the Loose: Zoo Hoax Fools Us All’ and ‘Black Cat: Friend or Foe?’
Again, these two villains haven’t ever met Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, they did briefly appear in Andrew Garfield’s last outing as the wallcrawler: The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Paul Giamatti appeared as Rhino at the very end of that movie, while Felicity Jones popped up as Felicia Hardy, who comic fans know later becomes Black Cat. There's also the fact that the Spider-Man picture hiding in the first Morbius trailer is 100% Tobey Maguire's version of the character from the original trilogy.
So what’s going on? Is Sony building to some big multiverse crossover? Will any of it make sense? Do we even really care? We’ll have answers to all those questions and more when Morbius releases January 28, 2022.
