The first Metal Gear Solid game is being praised as one of the first great stories in gaming.

The Metal Gear Solid series has arguably one of the most confusing timelines in gaming, especially if you’re just going off the games by themselves and not the supplementary material and online forums.

Check out the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake trailer below.

In terms of gameplay, it’s relatively simple, often involving sneaking around a large open level, enduring cutscenes that feel like feature-length films, and fighting some of the most creatively designed bosses in video games.

While the series got progressively wilder as time went on, the first game holds a special place in many gamer’s hearts, largely due to how it turned what would usually be a simple war and espionage plot into pure narrative brilliance.

Reddit user 416_LateNights asked: “What game in your opinion has the best story? Games where they did an amazing job developing all the characters and story. Even though you disagreed with the bad guys, you still sympathised with them and understand their side. I'd say mine have to be Baldur’s Gate 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2.”

One commenter replied with a list including: “Bioshock 1, Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 3, Silent Hill 1,” prompting other Metal Gear fans to agree, with many praising just how wild Hideo Kojima went with its characters and storylines.

One fan added: “Came here to say MGS1, I just wanted a simple war game, I did not expect any of that. A psychic mind reader!? A twin!? Liquid Snake!? Fox Die!? Gene therapy!?”

Another said: “MSG1 blew my mind. It was one of a kind.” While we’ll likely never see a continuation of the Metal Gear Solid series following Kojima’s departure from Konami, fans can at least look forward to the upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake which launches next year.

As for the first game, it’ll soon be playable as part of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, which launches on 24 October.
