'Mass Effect 5' Has Officially Entered Early Development

BioWare have confirmed Mass Effect 5 is now in early development, although it's still likely to be years away from release.

It’s a good time to be a Mass Effect fan. Last year, we were treated to the remastered Mass Effect Legendary Edition and we’ve known for quite some time now that a new entry in the series is planned.

Announced in December 2020, updates on the temporarily-titled Mass Effect 5 have been far and few between. A recent poster featuring a ship positioned next to a crater that heavily teased the return of the Geth, whilst it also appeared that one of the figures standing nearby was a Krogan. Pouring over miniscule details, albeit hi-resolution ones, isn’t quite enough sustenance though.

If you need a reminder, check out the Mass Effect 5 teaser trailer below.

Well in a new blog post, BioWare have confirmed that Mass Effect 5 is “now early in development,” which is a crumb of an update but good sirs, we shall take it willingly. It comes after developers previously told fans that they were “hard at work” in January.

In truth, it seems that Mass Effect 5 is years away from completion, but it's nice to know that it shall be waiting for us one day in the far and distant future. The belief is that the game will continue on from Mass Effect 3, which fits with what we saw in the teaser trailer released during The Game Awards 2020.

The trailer undeniably confirmed the return of Reapers, but it was Liara’s scenes that stirred up the most theories. Some believe her to be in the Milky Way, others believe she’s on Earth. It’s unlikely that Mass Effect 5 would totally ignore the events of Mass Effect: Andromeda. After all, we do hear “Ark six is away” within the trailer which surely references the Arks sent to Andromeda.

I wish I could say it won’t be long until our theories are proven to be true or false but for now, a crumb of an update for a beggar will do.
