Mario Oreos are already being scalped for ridiculous amounts

Nothing is sacred anymore, as scalpers are selling limited edition Super Mario Bros. Oreo cookies for extortionate prices.

It’s been a good year for Super Mario fans. First we had The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was a box-office success and is already teasing a sequel, then we got a Super Mario RPG remake and the Super Mario Bros. Wonder announcement, and now we’ve got Mario-themed Oreos, life is good. The new Oreos feature a colourful new pack plastered with classic Nintendo charm, as well as 16 new designs based on beloved Mario characters. There’s the red plumber himself Mario, his brother Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser and even some minions like Koopa Troopers and Boos.

Speaking of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, take a look at the game in action below.

Revealed with a cute little promotional video on the official Nintendo Twitter accounts, the cookies will be rolling out to worldwide retailers soon, but eager consumers could pre-order packs in advance from select stores, which is kind of wild when you think about it - we’re pre-ordering cookies.

Unfortunately, some people just had to go and ruin the fun, as scalpers are listing their pre-orders on eBay with horrendous pricing for those who were unable to secure their own packs. It’s been reported they’re being sold for $30, $40 and even $75 per pack. You’d hope no one is silly enough to pay that much for a pack of Oreos, Mario branding or not, but I’m sure there are some die-hard collectors out there willing to drop a chunk of cash for their own pack.

It’s one thing to scalp a new games console or a particularly rare game, but I think we should be drawing the line at snacks, even if they are limited editions.

The Super Mario Bros. Oreos will be available in select retailers after 10 July. It's probably worth grabbing a few packs while you can just in case they’re hard to find.
