The Lord of the Rings is making quite a comeback, with the upcoming RPG game on track to be a serious competitor for Hogwarts Legacy 2.
Two new Lord of the Rings films are currently in production, one of which being a prequel centered around Gollum, and another adapting some Fellowship of the Ring chapters that weren’t featured in the live-action film.
Then we have a new open-world RPG said to be in development, that’ll apparently let players explore Tolkien’s Middle-Earth in its entirety.
At the same time the Harry Potter franchise is also seeing a resurgence, with a new TV series starting towards the end of this year and a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy on the way too.

The new Lord of the Rings RPG is being positioned as the global phenomena’ answer to Hogwarts Legacy, with both games being faithful, large-scale depictions of their respective worlds.
Now, a new update on this mysterious project is great news for fans of The Lord of the Rings, but bad news for Hogwarts Legacy enjoyers.
Polish industry insider Ryszard Chojnowski claims the game will be developed by Warhorse Studios, the same studio that brought last year’s Game of the Year nominee Kingdom Come Deliverance II.
The game was heralded as one of the best games of 2025, scoring highly with reviewers and players alike.
It boasted an impressive open-world that far exceeded the original game, with improved combat, immersive gameplay mechanics and an excellent narrative.

Given the medieval setting of the Kingdom Come Deliverance games it’d only be natural for Warhorse Studios to be tasked with bringing The Lord of the Rings to life. The only concern is whether the new RPG will be first-person like the studio’s previous games.
While it worked for Kingdom Come Deliverance and its sequel, a journey through Middle-Earth feels like it's best experienced in third-person. It’d also bring the game in-line with previous games in the franchise like those found on the PlayStation 2, many of which are fondly remembered by gamers.
The prospect of an open-world Lord of the Rings game is very exciting, and if the rumours are true it could be a serious competitor to Hogwarts Legacy 2.
It’d also have a significant advantage over the next Wizarding World game as despite the Harry Potter franchises’ overwhelming success it’s still being bogged down by controversy surrounding J.K Rowling.
At the time of writing there’s no telling when this Lord of the Rings game will finally reveal itself, but perhaps this year’s Game Awards is a safe bet.
