Lord of the Rings RPG surfaces online ahead of official reveal

Lord of the Rings fans are eating well at the moment, with new films set in Tolkien’s Middle-Earth, another season of Amazon’s Rings of Power series, and a new game to look forward to.

Hope is on the horizon, as Reddit user DwingRD spotted a mysterious, unreleased port of a classic Lord of the Rings game on SteamDB.

It’s titled Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition, and seems to be a remake/remaster of the 2011 RPG. Warner Bros is yet to officially confirm its existence.

Even more interesting is the EpicOnlineServices spotted in the files, which, as DwingRD pointed out, implies the re-release will use Unreal Engine 5. At the time of writing, it looks like it'll be on PC only, but until it's announced officially we can't know for sure.

There’s no telling when we’ll see this mystery title get officially announced, but if SteamDB has been updated, it suggests we’ll catch a glimpse soon.

For those that haven’t played it, Lord of the Rings: War in the North launched on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011 and is set during the events of the War of the Ring.

Gameplay is hack-and-slash, with the player building their own fellowship of allies before taking on increasingly challenging battles as they attempt to level up their character. Ranger, Elf, and Dwarf are the three classes you can choose from.

Critical reception to the game was decent, but not exceptional. Considering it was followed by Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War, it’s not surprising that this isn’t a fondly remembered title, but clearly someone at Warner Bros. Games thinks it deserves a second chance.

Not the only Lord of the Rings game to rule them all

Don’t forget that we’re currently expecting another Lord of the Rings game too. Earlier this year, Warhorse Studios announced that it was working on its own RPG set in the world of The Lord of the Rings. This was excellent news as Warhorse is responsible for the critically-acclaimed Kingdom Come Deliverance series, the latest game of which was up for Game of the Year in 2025.

Few details were shared on the upcoming project, but it’ll likely be first-person and set in the open world of Middle-earth, so it’s already off to a good start.

It’s entirely possible that this potential Lord of the Rings: War in the North re-release could be meant to tide fans over while they wait for a brand-new experience.

We’d have preferred some of the PlayStation 2 or OG Xbox games, of course, but like many licensed games from that era, securing the rights must be as difficult as walking into Mordor.
