Lara Croft Returns, New Tomb Raider Game Officially Confirmed

Our favourite adventurer returns

The Game Awards 2025 is just a couple of days away and with another jam-packed show expected, it seems as though the beloved Tomb Raider franchise will be joining the fray.

According to a Tweet shared by both Geoff Keighley and the official Tomb Raider account, Tomb Raider will be featured in some capacity at The Game Awards on 11 December but in what capacity remains the big question.

“Did you miss her? She missed you,” the Tweet reads. "As just revealed in The Game Awards Vote in Fortnite map portal, tune in to @thegameawards on December 11 for a look at the future of one of gaming's most iconic franchises @tombraider.”

So what could it be?

Well, the most likely is the Tomb Raider game that has been in development at Crystal Dynamics for quite some time now.

First announced back in 2022, the game has yet to be officially shown, other than a brief look at Lara Croft’s new design, but it is reported to still be in development in some capacity.

However, its delay is not surprising considering that Crystal Dynamics has been through quite some major changes over the past few years.

Back in 2022, Embracer Group purchased Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise as a whole from Square Enix before selling both off to Middle-earth Enterprises two years later.

Additionally, Crystal Dynamics has been hit with three-waves of layoffs in recent years.

Or Maybe a TV Show...

All of this is bound to have an impact on the development of any projects it currently has under its belt, including the next Tomb Raider entry.

However, it may not be a video game announcement at all.

As we all know, a Tomb Raider live-action television show is also in the works with Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner taking on the role of Lara Croft.

Arriving on Amazon in collaboration with Story Kitchen, the show will "reinvent the franchise on a massive scale" and will combine “live-action television series and video games into a unified storytelling universe.”

However, as the series has not even begun shooting just yet, we can assume that this mysterious The Game Awards’ announcement will center on the game instead.

Will we finally get our first look at a trailer? Or maybe even a release date?

It remains to be seen but it will definitely be an exciting time for fans of the Tomb Raider franchise as a whole.
