Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is the next highly anticipated game from Naughty Dog, the studio behind The Last of Us and Uncharted. Here’s everything we know so far about its release date, PS5 gameplay, cast and story.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was officially announced at The Game Awards in 2024, with Naughty Dog closing out the show by revealing the first cinematic trailer for its new IP. Since then, we’ve yet to learn its official release date or window, or when pre-orders will go live. However, Naughty Dog has now provided an update on when we can expect to hear more.
We do know that Naughty Dog’s new action-adventure follows bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun, who finds herself stranded on the isolated planet of Sempiria. The game will also feature a retro-futuristic aesthetic.
What is the latest Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet update?
In celebration of The Last of Us Day on September 28, 2026, Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann provided an important update on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, marking the first substantial news we’ve heard in quite some time.
“The team is heads down on what is shaping up to be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious game yet. There’s an electricity around the studio right now as all the pieces come together, and we’re stoked to finally unveil Intergalactic in all its glory,” said Druckmann in a Naughty Dog blog post.

“But…we need to cook for just a little bit longer. So we want to set expectations: we’re going to be quiet for the rest of this year. In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.”

What is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet about?
Jordan A. Mun and the mission on Sempiria
“Intergalactic stars our newest protagonist, Jordan A. Mun (Tati Gabrielle), a dangerous bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago,” announced Naughty Dog following the reveal at The Game Awards 2024.
“In fact, anyone who’s flown to it hoping to unravel its mysterious past was never heard from again. Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit.”
Themes of faith, religion and loneliness
During an interview with Alex Garland on Sony’s YouTube channel, Druckmann explained that the game is set 2,000 years in the future but draws inspiration from how people in the 1980s imagined that future.
Druckmann went on to explain that faith and religion are key creative themes in Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Naughty Dog spent years developing the history of a fictional religion, including how its teachings changed and evolved. These elements will be explored throughout the game.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will also explore isolation and loneliness. Druckmann explained that, unlike many of the studio’s previous games, he wants players to feel lost and uncertain about the world around them.
“So many games we've done have been about always being an ally with you, talking – really want you to be lost in a place that you're really confused about what happened here, who are the people here, what was their history,” said Druckmann.
What do we know about Intergalactic gameplay?
At this time, we’ve yet to see any proper gameplay, aside from a brief moment in the cinematic reveal trailer that some viewers believe could be gameplay footage. Even then, Naughty Dog hasn't confirmed whether this is the case, so it's purely speculation for now.
In a PlayStation Blog post published on December 12, 2024, Neil Druckmann teased that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, an action-adventure game, would feature Naughty Dog's deepest gameplay yet. The studio will build on lessons learned from The Last of Us and Uncharted.
In the cinematic trailer, we see Jordan confronting a hulking robot while wielding an illuminated, red-bladed weapon. She then leaps towards the robot, potentially for a close-quarters attack, before the scene cuts away. It's this moment that some viewers believe could be a snippet of gameplay, but that hasn't been confirmed.
We also don't know whether Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will be an open-world game. If it is, it would mark a significant step for the studio, which has previously experimented with open-world and semi-open environments in games such as Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and The Last of Us Part II. It will be interesting to see whether Naughty Dog takes this approach further in its new IP.

Is Intergalactic a PS5 exclusive?
Yes, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. It hasn't been announced for PC, but given reports that Sony is moving away from releasing its first-party single-player games on PC for the foreseeable future, I wouldn't put too much hope in Intergalactic coming to anything other than PS5 just yet. We'll have to wait and see for sure.
