House of the Dragon is apparently coming to an end way sooner than expected.

House of the Dragon is one of HBO’s latest Goliath TV series and offers as a prequel to Game of Thrones set around 200 years prior to its events with the Targaryen's reign at its peak of power during a time when dragons in the skies were plenty.

For better or worse (though the less said about its final season the better), Game of Thrones lasted eight seasons and it’s likely that fans will be hoping for a similar continuation with House of the Dragon. Sadly, that might not be the case.

As reported by GGRecon (via IndieWire), we know that season two is on the way and now series showrunner, Ryan Condal has confirmed that season three will also be coming to HBO.

Unfortunately, when asked how many seasons House of the Dragon will run for, Condal replied: “It’s more than two,” before cutting short his words abruptly. However, Condal did add: “That's part of the discussion that we're having. Where do you appropriately end the series in a way that doesn't feel clipped, but also doesn't feel dragged out?”

Of course, this is by no means confirmation that House of the Dragon won't run for at least four seasons. It could just be the fact that until confirmation is ready to be announced, Condal will be bogged down by a strict NDA enforced by HBO.

What’s more, it will also depend if the story of House of the Dragon can be expanded in a meaningful way, rather than being dragged out for the sake of making the series run for longer.

Sadly, we know that’s a possibility, as AMC’s The Walking Dead is a series that comes to mind that started out great, but possibly way outstayed its welcome by the time it finally concluded with its 11th season.

At the time of writing, there is no House of the Dragon season two release date, but it is expected to arrive on Max in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK sometime during 2024.

In related news, Ryan Condal also recently told IndieWire that he was terrified that HBO was on the verge of cancelling House of the Dragon.
