Horizon Zero Dawn meets Assassin’s Creed in open world RPG

With the month coming to an end, it is the perfect time to catch up on some games we might have missed over recent years. That is even more the case for Horizon Zero Dawn and Assassin’s Creed fans with one open-world RPG combining the best of both worlds.

ELEX II is an open-world RPG from the developers at Piranha Bytes and continues on with the story from its prequel, ELEX. The single-player story follows Jax who is tasked with uniting the free people of Magalan - a science fantasy world who finds themselves facing a threat from the Skyands.

Check out the ELEX II trailer below!

“Several years after Jax defeated the Hybrid, a new threat arrives from the sky, unleashing the dangerous powers of dark Elex and endangering all life on the planet,” reads the official synopsis on Steam. “In order to defend the peace on Magalan and the safety of his own family, Jax has to go on a mission to convince the factions to unite against the invaders and find his own son, Dex, who got separated from him…”

The world of Magalan is designed with massive environments that can easily be maneuvered with the use of a jetpack, allowing Jax to fly between the factions in the post-apocalyptic setting. Not only that but combat will be fluid and dynamic whether you choose to fight close or long range.

As with any massive open-world game, it needs to be populated with a diverse bunch of NPCs and ELEX II does just that. The NPCs will remember your heroic deeds, join or leave your party depending on your behaviour and are even able to be killed which can have a drastic effect on your story. In a world where actions have consequences, you will need to have friends by your side.

Although ELEX II currently sits at a “mixed” on Steam, it hasn’t stopped many players from enjoying it with one review praising the title’s “story-rich content”. Others praise the game’s use of a jetpack for traversal as well as “an attention to detail, with seemingly hand-placed world elements” and “large, lushly decorated single-piece environments to explore”.

ELEX II is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
