'Hogwarts Legacy' Devs Share Brilliant Gameplay Bug Cut From State Of Play Trailer

We’re hoping this isn’t representative of the final game.

After almost two years with no information about the upcoming Harry Potter-themed game, Hogwarts Legacy, these last few months have set us all on a rollercoaster of emotions.

In February, insiders were saying that a big PlayStation State Of Play was coming in March, and that gameplay from the game set in the famous wizarding world would be shown. However, that showcase came and went with not so much as a whiff of a Niffler. Then Sony gave us all emotional whiplash by announcing a second State Of Play, with this one focused solely on Hogwarts Legacy. It’s safe to say the footage gave the people what they wanted. Following the latest news, the original announcement trailer went on to become PlayStation’s most viewed video, showing that fans are eager to get their hands on it.

Those who missed the gameplay shown during March’s magical State Of Play can catch all that new information in the video below.

With the State of Play footage showing off around 15 minutes of cinematics and gameplay, it seems likely that developer Avalanche would have had a lot of B-roll left up its wizard’s sleeve, content that wasn’t shown. And sure enough, that’s the case. While the gameplay that made the final State of Play cut featured character creation, exploration, and wand-waving warfare, there wasn’t anything quite like what was recently shown on Twitter.

The wizarding world contains a lot of different magical creatures, from house elves and goblins to centaurs and giants, and with each creature great or small comes their own challenges. For each different species or race, the studio has to create a character model, with its own unique animations, hit boxes, and collision detection. Getting all those things right isn’t always as simple as it seems, as the team has now shown us in the new footage - which is, of course, representative of an in-development gameplay bug and not the end product.

While this new footage doesn’t represent final gameplay, it seems to suggest that development on Hogwarts Legacy still has quite some way to go. Hopefully everything gets ironed out for that late 2022 release.
