Hogwarts Legacy critics are using Steam to protest the game

A few fans say that the purchase of the game is a show of support for transphobia and antisemitism.

Releasing for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles in less than a month's time, Hogwarts Legacy hype is rising and rising. At the same time, it's a game that is snared in controversy thanks to the problematic leanings of Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling.

While Rowling's work was used as the foundation for this 19th century version of the magical school, Warner Bros stated that she is not involved in any way in its development. Still, the purchase of Hogwarts Legacy has been seen by some to be a show of support for her transphobic opinions and accused antisemitism. Seemingly, fans fall into two camps: extremely excited or cynical to the point where they will try to undermine the game's chances of success.

Take a tour of the Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw common rooms in Hogwarts below:

The option of review-bombing the game isn't possible for its detractors, so what they did was add nonsensical user-assigned tags to Hogwarts Legacy's listing. At the top of the pile, we've got the standard "magic," "fantasy," "open world," "adventure," and "RPG" tags. However, as spotted by games radar, the previous instances of Hogwarts Legacy's listing had things like "villain protagonist," "capitalism," "NSFW," "World War II," and "psychological horror."

They've since been deleted but you don't need immense detective skills to twig the intention behind the deed. "Villain protagonist" could arguably apply as Hogwarts Legacy is allowing players to inflict Unforgivable Curses on others and choose their own path in this battle between our central characters and the faction of Dark Wizards. Imaginably, as the release of the RPG approaches, this won't be the last protest we witness against the game owing to the weight of its accrued controversies.
