Helldivers 2 is one of the best multiplayer games to release in the last decade, and it’s being honoured for its service with an exciting new project.
In the far future there’s nothing but war apparently, with some of the most popular futuristic game series revolving around a battle between good and evil, humanity and a hostile alien force.
Helldivers 2 gets silly with it though, putting players in the boots of cannon fodder you’d see getting blasted in the background of your favourite sci-fi movie.
It also leans into imperialism, fascism and colonialism, with the game constantly going on about liberty in the galaxy.

Helldivers 2 is fantastic, and while updates for the game aren’t stopping anytime soon it’s now being translated into a film.
Sony has confirmed as much, via HollywoodReporter, with the film already having a director, producer and script ready to go.
Gary Dauberman is responsible for the script, which cinephiles may know from It and Annabelle. An interesting background for a film about Helldivers.
Directing the film will be Justin Lin, who Fast And Furious fans will recognise instantly. Lin has stated that he’s not really a fan of video games, but I don’t think that’s anything to worry about as Helldivers 2 doesn’t have an overly complex narrative to translate to the big-screen.

The only concern I have is how it’ll compare to other films in the genre. Helldivers doesn't hide the fact it was inspired by Starship Troopers but with that film series long-dead perhaps this will be the start of something new, and beautiful.
One thing that does fill me with hope is Gary Dauberman providing the script. His horror background is oddly perfect for a Helldivers film because as many players will know some of the gameplay can be downright horrifying at times.
Players are pushed to their limits and come face-to-face with horrors beyond their comprehension, as they’re pulled apart by enormous bugs and stalked by killer robots. It’s a horror game in all but name.

A release window for the Helldivers film is currently unknown.
What Made Helldivers 2 Such A Success?
Helldivers 2 succeeded because it listened to player feedback, and made them part of the story.
Updates for Helldivers 2 aren’t just about new content, they also expand the ever-changing narrative of the game which has incited a lot of support from the community.

When Arrowhead Studios tells players that Super Earth is under attack and needs assistance, the playerbase spikes, a true testament to the world building and community-first approach to the game.
