HBO's The Last of Us fans unsure over one major change from the game

HBO's The Last of Us departed from Naughty Dog's game in a major way this week, and some fans aren't sure how they feel.

Just a few weeks ago, reviews for HBO’s The Last of Us first landed online and critics were in universal agreement about one thing in particular. Many teased that the show’s third episode was the best in the series, with some even going as far as saying it’s one of the best episodes of television they’ve ever seen.

This article contains spoilers for episode three.

Well, episode three has finally arrived and I think it’s fair to say critics were telling the truth. ‘Long Long Time’ may mark the biggest departure from the original game so far, but it’s also The Last of Us’ most triumphant episode. Exploring the backstory of Bill and Frank, fans fiercely defended the heartbreaking tale from a small minority of viewers who branded it a ‘filler’ episode. As much as the audience enjoyed the latest instalment though, many are saddened by one major change.

Take a look at the trailer below to see what else is in store this season on The Last of Us.

Fans are upset that we’ll never get to see Ellie and Bill meet, seeing as by the time Joel and Ellie reach Bill and Frank, they’re both dead. Ellie and Bill’s relationship is certainly a highlight of the game, namely because it's clear that the duo clash with each other in a very entertaining way. Twitter user ellievjoel wrote, “It’s actually a crime that they took the Bill/Ellie scenes away from us. They were so chaotic.”

User satoriearth added, “The only complaint I can have about last night's episode is that Bill and Ellie didn’t get to meet because their banter is some of my favourite in the entire game,” while hairysteves said, “I think the episode was good and cute and sad but I still wish Bill and Ellie got to meet and we had annoying bickering.” It’s true. I’d have loved to have seen Bella Ramsey’s Ellie and Nick Offerman’s Bill come face-to-face, but we got a pretty good treat instead.

Seeing as we completely skipped over the ‘Bill’s Town’ segment as we know it in the game, it also means we’re yet to see a Bloater in the HBO series. ‘Bill’s Town’ is the first time we encounter one in the game and we know Bloaters will appear in the series as we’ve already caught a glimpse in the trailer. Onwards to Kansas City we go.
