Guitar Hero Devs Officially Returning for New Game

Guitar Hero remains, to this day, a GOAT of the rhythm game genre.

It’s with that in mind that it’s odd that the series’ heyday feels like such a distant memory; once upon a time, I’d have thought of Guitar Hero as a series that could easily withstand the test of time.

Alas, it didn’t, with the last mainline entry, Guitar Hero Live, releasing in 2015.

The day many of us have been waiting for, though, has almost finally arrived.

While I’d be lying if I told you that a new Guitar Hero instalment is on the way, I can confirm that a bunch of ex Guitar Hero devs have teamed up for a brand new release which is easily the next best thing.

RedOctane Games is the studio you’ll want to be keeping an eye on.

Concerned with “advancing the rhythm game genre", the studio comprises various former Guitar Hero devs including the likes of franchise founders Charles and Kai Huang and production designer Simon Ebejer.

As for that game they’re working on, well, RedOctane Games hasn’t exactly unveiled it just yet; we simply know something is in the works.

And yes, before you ask, it is one that’ll depend on some cool musical hardware by the sounds of it, just like those Guitar Hero entries of yesteryear.

“We’ve got a team. A real one. We’ll grow it as we need to. But this project, this game is not just for the fans. It’s by the fans, and with the fans from day one,” read a blog post by the new studio.

“This game won’t be Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Guitar Freaks or Rockband. This is something new. A rhythm game built with love, by people who care, with the community at its core in this fast-changing modern world we live in.”

“We’re not just making games, we’re creating connected rhythm experiences that unite cutting-edge controllers, genre-defining titles, and a thriving community,” it also stated.

It all sounds pretty exciting although, naturally, we could be waiting a while for something substantial to appear.

It sounds like RedOctane Games has been prototyping accompanying hardware for a new rhythm game for several years now, and I definitely recommend giving it a read for more information on that.

There’s very little on what the studio’s first game might look like though, making me think it’s pretty early in production.

Even still, a new rhythm game from former Guitar Hero devs? I’ll be there on day one.
