James Gunn Confirms 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3' Will Be The Last In Its Series

James Gunn Confirms 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3' Will Be The Last In Its Series

It’s three and out for this particular space-faring crew of misfit heroes

James Gunn, the director of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel, has again confirmed to fans that the third GOTG movie in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe run will be the last to feature the crew of Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket, Gamora and Drax.

Speaking to Deadline for their Hero Nation podcast, and as reported by Comicbook, Gunn says: “I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story.” The key words there: “the wrap-up”. Closure. A fitting end. And that’s a challenge Gunn is very wary of getting just right, as he adds: “That's always a little bit scary (but) I'm doing my best.”

Gunn told Deadline that the third GOTG movie, due in cinemas in 2023, will be “so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be”. Many fans will be expecting at least one of the core crew to be killed off, as Gunn has previously teased that they’ve been safe for the first two films, and moviegoers will have to “wait and see” when it comes to their fates in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

As well as the third Guardians picture, Gunn is also working on a live-action/animation hybrid movie version of the Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoons made famous by Warner Bros’ Looney Tunes shorts. IDK about you, but I’m way more interested in seeing how that plays out than how Chris Pratt does or doesn’t make it through the next Guardians flick. Gunn is writing the movie, titled Coyote vs Acme, and it’s due out in the summer of 2023. Beep, and beep again, indeed. Catapult me right into an Odeon for that one.

In related Marvel news, new casting rumours for Netflix shows have been met with some criticisms, and a cameo for the forthcoming second Doctor Strange movie has apparently leaked. Find loads more Marvel stuff, right here.
