GTA VI could cost more than expected in certain parts of the world depending on how your country handles its taxes.
Despite the entertainment sector being an opportunity for creators, studios, and fans to express themselves, it’s arguably being gutted by the economy.
Take what’s happening in America, for example. The Trump Administration’s tariffs mean films made outside of the United States will need to pay more to have them shown to an American audience, which isn’t great news for Marvel fans as several upcoming MCU projects are being filmed in the United Kingdom.
Gaming is also being affected now elsewhere, as Mexico’s congress has agreed to a hefty 8% tax for a variety of products, including video games it deems as too violent.

As you can imagine, Grand Theft Auto fans living in Mexico are now worried about GTA VI’s release date, as we’re swiftly approaching its May 2026 launch.
Despite not seeing actual gameplay, GTA VI is almost guaranteed to be seen as too violent in Mexico so it’ll almost definitely get hit with the increased tax.
While this means little for Rockstar Games, it means a lot for the fans, as they’ll now have to pay more for their copy on launch date.
The news was shared to X and was met with disappointment by many, with one fan simply replying, “What a joke.”

Most of the concerns arise from rumours GTA VI will cost $100. It’s one of the most expensive media products that has ever been made, so it’d make sense for Rockstar Games to charge an above-premium price for it, despite the obvious response it’ll incite from players.
The creator of Saints Row recently commented on the rumours saying if any studio was going to get away with charging so much for a game, it’d probably be Rockstar, as the Grand Theft Auto series holds so much weight in the gaming industry, many would probably have no issue paying that much for it.
There’s still no evidence to say it’ll cost that much but if it does, it means those in Mexico will be paying an absurd amount with an 8% tax thrown on top.
Fans are speculating that another trailer for GTA VI is due this November so if Rockstar Games has been paying attention, it’d do well to announce a retail price at the same time so we can hopefully put some of these rumours to bed.
