GTA 6's 'Main Competitor' Roasted By Gamers

One industry analyst has pinpointed exactly which game is set to be Grand Theft Auto VI’s main competition when it releases later next year, and it’s pretty great news for Rockstar Games.

Few video games will ever challenge the Grand Theft Auto franchise, at least in terms of sales. Perhaps only a mere handful of titles may come close to matching the level of hype that Rockstar Games’ upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI is currently generating in our lifetimes.

So, what game could possibly rival GTA VI on release? What developer is set to siphon off some of its potential sales?

Rockstar Games’ GTA V, of course.

That's according to Circana's senior director Mat Piscatella, who stated that he believes GTA V will be GTA VI’s “biggest competitor” in an interview with Games Industry's Lewis Packwood.

"You look at something like Fortnite… It's been, what, seven, eight years now that that thing's been the biggest thing in the world. Or Minecraft”, Piscatella stated.

“And Grand Theft Auto 5 launched in 2013. It's still one of the top 20 bestselling games every single month… The biggest competitor to Grand Theft Auto 6 will be Grand Theft Auto 5. It's wild times to be trying to make new video games."

Over on the r/GTA subreddit, some fans are poking fun at how ridiculous this sounds but… I think Piscatella is onto something here.

When was the last proper open-world, third person shooter you can think of that was marketed as if it was on the same level as GTA VI? MindsEye, maybe? Yeah, that turned out great.

I think that Piscatella is right in saying that the GTA is in a league of its own right now, and the only thing that’s going to impact its sales in any way are those who are unwilling to drop all of the progress they’ve made in GTA V.
