GTA 6 fans uncover 'subtle' hidden meaning behind Jason and Lucia's names

A Grand Theft Auto VI fan claims to have uncovered a hidden meaning behind the names of the game’s leading characters, Jason and Lucia.

Following last month’s 26-minute Extended Look at Grand Theft Auto VI, fans have been doing deep dives on all the new details that were revealed in the trailer as they wait for release day.

As the big day soon approaches, theories ranging from how the gameplay will function to the thematic implications of the lead characters’ names have been discussed and digested across many corners of the internet.

The latest theories comes from a Reddit post which discusses Jason and Lucia’s roles in the story of GTA VI, and how their names may have a deeper meaning.

Reddit user Matbo2210 starts their post by saying “hear me out”, adding that Rockstar is no stranger to having subtle foreshadowing and symbolism in the naming of their characters.

They go on to say that they came up with the post after listening to one of the tracks from the Extended Look, 'Devil Woman' by Cliff Richard. Whenever the song lyrics “she's just a devil woman, with evil on her mind” are heard, we see Lucia in the shot.

They add that the name Lucia could be a play on the word Lucifer, another name for the Devil in Christian theology, and this could play into theories that Lucia may be a bad influence on Jason in the GTA VI story.

The OP adds that Lucia is the feminine form of the Roman name Lucius, which is derived from the Latin word ‘lux’ meaning ‘light’. Lucifer is similar, derived from ‘lux’ and ‘ferre’ which means ‘lightbringer’. It’s also related to Venus, meaning that Lucia’s name could mean one of three things: “Light”, “Venus”, or “Lucifer”.

Jason's name also has a certain kind of implication

This led to OP researching the name Jason to see if it could be a coincidence, or if there’s more at play here.

There are a few different interpretations of where the name originates from, but a commonly accepted definition comes from the Greek Iásōn, meaning ‘healer’. However, OP adds: “It turns out Hellenized Jews substituted their Hebrew name of ‘Joshua’ for ‘Jason’. The reason why this is a big deal is that Jesus' Hebrew name was actually 'Yeshua' or ‘Joshua’. Which means Hellenized jews might have actually called Jesus 'Jason'.”

Although OP says this is “all a stretch”, they call it “fun to explore” and it does make sense within the logic of their post. It could hint at one side of the two characters thematically representing evil, while the other represents good, especially with the context that you may be making choices over the course of the game’s story which correspond with these moral virtues.

And yeah, it might be a big stretch. The main flaw in the post is that "Lucia" is also also a Christian name derived from Saint Lucia of Syracuse, a Roman Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution.

But I’m an English Literature graduate, so when it comes to the ‘Applicability vs Allegory’ debate (which itself is spun off from the ‘Death of the Author’ literary theory by Roland Barthes), I err on the side of applicability, and I think there's enough here that we could apply OP's theory.

Rockstar Games’ intentions may not be clear, but it’s also important to ask ‘What does this mean to me, right now?’ rather than ‘What did the author of the text intend?’ with narrative implications such as this.

Grand Theft Auto VI will release on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
