Although it is an exciting few months for Grand Theft Auto fans with GTA VI just a year away, it is not all sunshine and rainbows.

Expected in fall of 2025, Grand Theft Auto VI is finally on the horizon and with the second official trailer expected to drop any day now, fans are waiting on tenterhooks.

However, it is not good news for fans of GTA: San Andreas as it has been announced its VR port is now “on hold indefinitely”.

The project was first revealed back in 2021 when Meta announced it would be attempting to make a VR remake of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Described as “a project many years in the making”, the VR remake has never received any gameplay footage or a release date but that now doesn’t seem to be a problem.

The news comes after a Meta spokesperson spoke to IGN and confirmed the project was now on indefinite hold.

"GTA: San Andreas is on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects," the statement read.

"We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future."

The comments were made on the Meta Quest VR Youtube channel in the replies of a trailer for an upcoming Meta Quest title.

As a result, the announcement was almost missed.

GTA: San Andreas VR would have been the second Rockstar title adapted to the headset following L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files back in 2017.

However, this would have been the first time a GTA title was brought to VR.

San Andreas was first released in 2004 for the PS2 and as the seventh main title in the Rockstar series, it is still praised to this day.

That is why fans are disappointed with the news.

“Outside of VRchat with friends and Beat Saber for exercise, I haven't used my VR headset for much,” one comment read.

“Something like GTA in VR would've pushed the hardware strongly.”
