GTA 6 Classification Tells Us Everything we Wanted to Know, Bring it On

New content revealed.

GTA 6 has got a rating classification in Australia, and it tells us a bit more about what to expect in the final game.

For any type of media, whether that be video games, movies, TV, or published content, the product usually has to go through a process of receiving a rating in order to be approved for sale.

These ratings adhere to the appropriate minimum age that the content is suitable for, based on the content within the product itself.

For example, media that features nudity, drug use, or heavy violence will probably land itself an R rating, indicating that only adults can purchase and view it, while implied violence, mild language and minimal nudity may result in a less restrictive rating for younger audiences.

Earlier this year, Grand Theft Auto VI received a rating by the Australian Classification Board, giving the game a rating of MA 15+.

The classification was made on 15 June, which was prior to the delay that occurred back in November.

However, the classification is expected to remain the same by the time of release next year.

The classification includes the following content warnings: “Strong Violence, Strong Sexual References, Sexualised Imagery, Strong Nudity, Strong Sex Scenes, Strong Coarse Language, Strong Crude Humour”, which has resulted in the MA 15+ rating.

Films and games with an MA 15+ rating are restricted to customers aged 15 and over, and the Australian Classification Board counts this as content which includes “sex scenes and drug use that may have a strong impact on the viewer”.

Grand Theft Auto VI Age Rating Is Lower Than GTA V's

Interestingly, GTA V had a rating of Restricted 18+ in Australia, which is equivalent to a Mature rating in the United States or PEGI 18 in Europe. So, it’s possible this is still subject to change, knowing Rockstar Games’ affinity for controversial content.

“We are so back,” reads one comment on the GTA VI Reddit page in response to the game having “strong sex scenes”.

“No mention of drug use? Doesn’t pass the sniff test,” reads another comment sceptical about this.

It seems that this rating may be based on outdated information, and will be changed in the future as we get closer to launch. Given that it's still just under a year away, this is probably what is going to happen.

Grand Theft Auto VI releases on 19 November, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
