Rockstar Games just accidentally leaked that a pretty huge, much-requested feature is finally landing in Grand Theft Auto V’s online mode, GTA Online, and fans are feeling a little bit teary-eyed and melancholy about the whole thing.
As spotted by user @Floorball__ over on Twitter, the latest update for GTA Online features references to another, future update that was left over in the code, and it’s promising something big.
Quite literally big, I mean, because there are several references to “mansions” in the code.

“You have earned an exclusive discount on a future property purchase with Prix Luxury Real Estate,” reads one line. “They will be in contact again soon when properties become available."
There’s also another flag that directly refers to “MANSION_TEASER”, so, yeah. You can’t get more blatant than that.
Purchaseable mansions are something that Grand Theft Auto V fans have been begging for since the game first dropped, so they must be thrilled, right?
Well, based on the comments over on the r/gtaonline subreddit, they’re actually feeling pretty melancholy about the whole thing.

“Actually, maybe this is the endgame for GTA Online in Los Santos?” commented user PapaXan.
“We finally get to retire to a mansion after our years of robbing and murder.”
“Honestly, it’s weird to think that the December update could be the last. All of those years of regular DLC drops coming to an end is such an odd feeling”, replied user delta_SB15.
“Regardless, I think that while they could have been added a lot sooner, it would be nice to finally see mansions added (if it turns out to be true).”

Huh. Now I’m feeling kinda bummed out about the whole thing, too.
On the plus side, hopefully, this means that mansions will come as standard in GTA 6’s online mode. Would seem kinda weird for them to add something to GTA 5 that isn’t going to be present in GTA 6 at launch, especially this late in the game.
