God of War Ragnarök side quests are of Witcher 3 quality, developer teases

Following praise from reviewers, one Ragnarök dev has revealed that matching the quality of The Witcher 3's side quests was always the goal.

We’re in the endgame now - God of War Ragnarök is releasing tomorrow, and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that this day can’t pass quickly enough. Following a tidal wive of overwhelmingly positive reviews, it seems like Kratos’ latest adventure is on track to become a new PlayStation favourite.

One part of the game that’s gotten a lot of reviewers excited is the side content. Here at GAMINGbible, in Ewan Moore’s 9/10 review, he highlighted the quality of the side quests, noting that they’re “genuinely worth your time”. He wrote: “These are some of the best-written quests I’ve enjoyed in a game since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and they feel so necessary to the overall story that I’d hesitate to tell anyone to skip them.”

Take a look at this weird God of War Ragnarök trailer below, which casts Ben Stiller as Kratos.

He’s not the only critic who thought this - as reported by PlayStation LifeStyle, The Washington Post’s Gene Park took to Twitter last week, saying that “God of War Ragnarök has finally dethroned The Witcher 3 with the best side quests I’ve played in an adventure game.” Well, it turns out that this was the devs’ intention all along.

Responding to the tweet, Anthony DiMento, the lead player investment designer at Santa Monica Studio, wrote: “This was the goal I set for the optional content in God of War Ragnarök. The Witcher 3 is one of my favourite games of all time... It didn't seem possible, but this was literally the goal. Reading this felt amazing.”

The game’s lead level designer, Luis Sanchez, was also thrilled with the praise: “As the level lead on the exploration content the recognition means so much. We pour everything into every inch of this game. The team doesn’t treat it as just side content, everything is crafted to enhance the world and player experience. So proud of what we accomplished.”

Players will finally be able to see what all the fuss is about in just a few hours’ time when the game releases.
