Record-Breaking Twitch Streamer Banning Fans For Gifting Too Many Subs

There’s a limit to your love

Ludwig Ahgren, a Smash Bros. player who's successfully expanded into other areas, is now the most-subscribed-to streamer on Twitch. As I write this, the American is on 2.1 million followers and 113,000 subscribers. Which is, yeah, that's the big money, given that each Twitch subscription is worth at least $4.99 per month. (Or, is it? Read on to the end of this piece.)

Ludwig's subscriber count was rather lower, just days ago - but he's been on a mission to drive those subs, higher and higher, embarking on a 'subathon' which has seen him go from fewer than 32,000 subscribers at the end of February to his current number. On March 18 alone, the streamer received over 23,500 new subscribers.

What's driving this rapid rise is certain viewers donating sums of money, including 'bits' worth just over a cent, to enable the gifting of subscriptions to others. Uncomfortable with this practice - as per reports at GameRant and Dexerto - Ludwig (and yes, that is his real name) has now taken the step of banning viewers who throw too much dough into the pot.

He has now set a limit of 100 subscriptions per viewer, and instructed mods to watch for anyone finding a way around this by using alternative accounts. Before introducing this limit, one viewer had donated an incredible seven thousand dollars to the subathon - which, by the way, is a continuous stream, maintained by Ludwig for as long as the subs are rolling in, with every new sub adding 15 seconds to the stream's length. At the time of writing, the stream has over 31 hours left to run.

Ludwig's mods have had to ban select viewers due to their attempts to over-gift - which seems like a weird thing to ban someone for, but given some of the sums of money we're talking about, it's a pretty responsible move from the streamer. "People are spending too much money, and it's a bit uncomfortable," he said, on stream (obvs), adding: "I want to curb the amount of money spent."

So, that's what's happening. These bans are, seemingly, temporary, and should be lifted at the end of the subathon - whenever that may come, given the amount of subs Ludwig has been receiving.

Despite the length of the stream and the subscriber numbers, Ludwig won't make a whole lot of money from his subathon - as Dexerto adds, tax regulations in his home state of California will be a substantial factor, alongside payment of mods and Twitch's own 35% cut, in him taking home less than 1% of his stream earnings, should they break half a million dollars.
