Fans of SEGA's famous blue blur, please mark your calendars now: the sequel to this year's Sonic the Hedgehog movie (which feels like it came out years ago - but no, it was early 2020) is due for release into cinemas on April 8th, 2022. Just before my 42nd birthday. What a treat, indeed.
Sonic the Hedgehog was, categorically, not a terrible video game adaptation (here's our review, ICYMI). I mean, it wasn't a good one, either - but the assessment of such feature-length endeavours are relative, and it was a far, far better film than, say, the Assassin's Creed flick. (Hopefully the Netflix show can wipe that nightmare from our memories.)
This information comes to us via Eurogamer, and in turn via Comicbook. The word is that the sequel - codenamed Emerald Hill (see whatcha did there, production peeps) - will start its filming in March 2021, assuming the world isn't in another lockdown, and wrap in May. Then it's onto all the digital effects, to bring Sonic himself, and pals, to life.

Do note, however, that the source cited by Comicbook has since gone dark again - so this could be speculation, or pure poppycock. I'm gonna go with: sounds about right, though. Sonic the Hedgehog was popular and successful enough, even with the onset of the pandemic, for a sequel to get the green light in May 2020; so the timeline as reported makes a heap of sense.
And Jim Carrey, who played Sonic's arch-enemy Dr Robotnik in the first film, has been very clear on his eagerness to come back for round two. Speaking during promotion for the first movie, he said: "I wouldn't mind going to do another one. Because it was so much fun, first of all, and a real challenge to try to convince people that I have a triple-digit IQ... There is so much room, you know, Robotnik has not reached his apotheosis."

Sonic's voice actor, Ben Schwartz, has also previously made his position on a sequel clear - he tweeted out news of the second film getting the go-ahead, earlier this year. Whether Sonic will be joined by Miles 'Tails' Prower, the double-tailed fox who starred in the video game sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, remains to be seen - but if you watched the first movie all the way through, you've probably half an idea.
