The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum, the upcoming action-adventure game that sees the world through the eyes of one of its most iconic characters, has finally shown off gameplay in a short trailer.
Announced in 2020, the game is being developed by Daedalic Entertainment, which is the team behind point-and-click exploration titles like Deponia, The Long Journey Home, and State of Mind. Of course, Gollum is no Aragorn, and the player must adopt the approaches of the duplicitous and desperate creature before the events of the books. The short snippet of gameplay shows that stealth and acrobatics are required to hide in the shadows of the mines of Mordor. Gollum is able to sprint if necessary, and clamber along wooden planks and the twisting caverns that he calls his home. Honestly, it's not an huge glimpse into the game, but seeing that The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum is still a long way off, it's a good affirmation that the project is progressing well.
Personally, I'm intrigued by the non-linear storytelling and the ability to define how the narrative will play out with regard to the Ring's influence over Gollum. At the time that the game is set, the Ring has twisted and corrupted his body and mind, but there are still moments of resistance that the player could seize to divert the story. "It's not just choosing to be Sméagol or Gollum, because for Gollum as an entity it's not that easy," explained designer Martin Wilkes. "Each personality is being attacked by the other; each has to defend himself. You will have maybe two, three or four conflicts per chapter that lead to a final decision point. And at this final decision point, it will be harder to pick Sméagol, for example, if you've always fought for the Gollum side before."
Excitingly, Daedalic Entertainment stated that it does have a contract with Middle-earth Enterprises which means that the company is free to devise a number of games based in the world of Tolkien's books. The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X next year.
