Dark Souls III - the latest and best-selling entry in FromSoftware's astonishing (and astonishingly brutal) RPG franchise - has topped over 10 million copies since it launched back in March 2016.

The new milestone takes the cumulative sales for the whole franchise - which includes Dark Souls (2011), Dark Souls II (2014), Dark Souls III (2016), and Dark Souls Remastered (2018) - to an impressive 27 million in lifetime sales.

In a press release (thanks, Gamasutra), developer FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco cite "the sense of accomplishment provided by its game design" and "the sense of mystery provided by its unique world building" as key reasons for the series' success, as well as its "transient online systems" that brings "bringing players together from around the world to adventure together".

The partners also took a moment to remind us that their next joint project will be Elden Ring, a new action RPG penned by no other than Game of Thrones author, George R.R. Martin. Elden Ring was officially announced at E3 2019, and is currently being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with no talk yet of next-gen version(s) being in the works.

Incredibly, a recent survey that asked over 1,000 US gamers to list what games stressed them out most, FromSoftware - the scamps behind some of the world's toughest gaming experiences - didn't make the top ten, while Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare (the 2019 version) was considered to be the most stressful game. A whopping 47.4% of respondents voted for the Infinity Ward shooter, which was closely followed by Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 (42.3%) and Fortnite (41.7%) respectively. As Ewan quite rightly pointed out at the time, it appears the respondents have never played a FromSoftware game in their lives.

Interestingly, The Sims topped the chart as the most chilled game, with 38.5% of respondents confirming it was the most relaxing titles in their libraries.
